Why your site needs to be agent-ready

If your site is invisible to agents today, it will be invisible to a meaningful slice of buyers tomorrow. The math is changing fast: AI-referred sessions already convert better than organic search on many ecommerce sites, and the agents driving that traffic are getting more capable every month. The question for every team running a website in 2026 isn’t whether agents will arrive — they already have — but whether the site is ready to do business with them when they do.

What “agent-ready” means

An agent-ready site is one that an autonomous AI can browse, evaluate, and transact with — without scraping, without guessing, and without a human having to step in. In practice that requires three things:

  • Identifiability. The agent can announce itself; the site can verify the announcement.
  • Structured surfaces. Critical product, content, and action data are exposed as machine-readable formats — not just rendered HTML.
  • Callable actions. Buying, signing up, searching, and similar tasks are addressable as URLs or API calls, not buried inside JS-only forms.

Most sites today fail all three. That’s not a criticism — it’s a leftover from a decade where the only visitor was a person.

Why “agents will figure it out” isn’t a strategy

A common objection: “If agents are smart, they’ll just scrape what they need from our existing site.” They will, partly. But scraping is slow, expensive, and error-prone. Every agent that has to scrape your site is one that’s going to:

  • Choose a competitor whose site is faster to read.
  • Recommend a product based on stale or partial data.
  • Fail at checkout because the form requires JavaScript or a multi-step flow.
  • Get blocked by your fraud filters because it looks like a bot.

Each one of these is lost revenue. Aggregated across millions of agent visits per month, it’s a meaningful share of the new market.

The four kinds of agent already on your site

If you’re not already seeing them, you’re not measuring them. The four types we see:

  • Browser-resident agents — Comet, Atlas, Gemini-in-Chrome, and the next wave of agentic browsers. Hard to tell from a real user without identification.
  • Headless agents — API-driven calls from OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, and others fetching, reasoning, and acting without a UI.
  • On-behalf-of agents — agents carrying signed credentials and explicit user intent, ready to transact when you let them.
  • Background bots — automated visitors performing research, monitoring, scraping. Sometimes welcome, often not.

You can’t write a policy for traffic you can’t see. The first step is identification at the edge.

What you actually have to ship

The shortest path to agent-ready is also the most boring one: drop in a script tag, flip a worker at your CDN, and let the infrastructure handle classification, intent capture, and adaptive rendering. No redesign. No CMS migration. No new analytics stack.

The site keeps its design, its content, its team. The agent layer runs alongside it.
